CHAPTER 17
StandÂing in an open paÂtient room sterÂilÂized of emoÂtion, two poÂlice ofÂfiÂcers droned their quesÂtions at Claire. UnÂknown to them, she had slipped from the inÂterÂview beÂfore it beÂgan. In her place, a stranger inÂhabÂited her body as it sat on the edge of the bed.
The stranger reÂsponded plainly to their queries, ofÂferÂing a mix of genÂerÂalÂiÂties and specifics seemÂinÂgly inÂtended to limit folÂlow-up quesÂtions. She didnât reÂmemÂber the words but later reÂcalled judgÂing the replies as adÂeÂquate. As the proÂceedÂings carÂried on with her disÂemÂbodÂied husk, she conÂtented herÂself by watchÂing medÂiÂcal staff walk the halls in slow moÂtion and countÂing dull colÂors found on furÂniÂture and walls. Words funÂneled back and forth through the air, obÂscurÂing her visÂual fasÂciÂnaÂtions. She could alÂmost reach out and touch them, if not for their forms crumÂbling upon her turnÂing her atÂtenÂtion to them.
When the ofÂfiÂcersâ inÂterÂests turned to elÂeÂments where honÂesty called into doubt her sanÂity, the stranger feigned memÂory loss or anÂswered vaguely. UnÂable to comÂpreÂhend the words themÂselves, Claire asÂsessed their transÂmisÂsion from one mouth to the next, acÂceptÂing the reÂsults as facts withÂout unÂderÂstandÂing what made them so, like a young stuÂdent beÂlievÂing in physics beÂfore learnÂing the math beÂhind it. InÂcorÂpoÂreal exÂamÂiÂnaÂtion of the inÂterÂviewÂers reÂvealed they acÂcepted these replies withÂout susÂpiÂcion. MeanÂwhile, the stranger conÂtrolÂling her body looked past them into a void. Its blank stare perÂsisted unÂtil the poÂlice inÂformed it that the camÂeras showed no sign of her atÂtacker. The ofÂfiÂcers, fixÂated on her bruised neck, reÂquested the stranger deÂscribe Ryan to a sketch artist. She shudÂdered from the fiÂnal renÂdiÂtion, which had capÂtured his essence down to his fiendish grin. The stranger reÂmained as a block of ice, and what the poÂlice made of this reÂsponse, they did not inÂdiÂcate.
The inÂterÂview conÂcluded shortly thereÂafÂter. She snuck back into her body, takÂing a moÂment to subÂdue the sickÂness and sufÂferÂing she had briefly left beÂhind. The poÂlice reÂmained while she reÂcovÂered enough to pose a quesÂtion of her own. ReÂvealÂing the FreÂdoÂnian letÂter, and claimÂing unÂcerÂtainty of its loÂcaÂtion, she asked what they would do with it if she found it.
Run it for prints and store it in a locker.
Away from puÂriÂfyÂing flames.
And so she said no more, optÂing to leave once docÂtors cleared her of a conÂcusÂsion and inÂterÂnal inÂjuÂries. From the inÂstant she started her car and beÂgan drivÂing, a foÂcus foisted itÂself upon her, as if she were a bee takÂing orÂders from her queen. Cars blurred into the backÂground. Stop signs and peoÂple shared silÂhouÂettes. MurkÂiÂness darkÂened othÂerÂwise bright stars. Her conÂcenÂtraÂtion broke only once, when a long red light and a seÂries of gulps seared into reÂalÂity reÂminÂders of the eveningâs atÂtack. Her windÂpipe closed as she reÂlived the stranÂgling, sufÂfoÂcatÂing her, drivÂing her to seek an outÂlet for reÂlief. She mesÂsaged Jess and Robert, Canât talk. Need you at my home ASAP, then the phone slipped onto the floorÂboard, and she wonÂdered if she should be drivÂing at all.
